Pale is the new tan!



Spring is here and the start of our warmer temps in Las Vegas. This year let’s make a pledge by protecting our skin against the harmful effects of prolonged exposure to sun and its UVA/UVB rays.  Truly, pale is the new tan.

Aside from painful sunburn, sun exposure causes brown spots; red scaly spots; drying and wrinkling, and worst of all, skin cancer.

Despite the well-known dangers of sun exposure, on occasion we can get lazy when it comes to protecting our skin, or just can’t resist the myth of ”getting a tan or some color” makes us look vibrant and healthy.

One of the best things you can do is cover up. The sun’s rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It is important to protect our skin by adding sunscreen with a SPF of 20 or better to our daily routine throughout the year. Wear hats and tightly woven clothing. These materials absorb ultraviolet light better than cotton fabrics in lighter shades.

Get in the habit of self-examination, check for moles, freckles, and age spots. Consult with your dermatologist immediately if see anything suspicious or if there are any changes in color, texture or their size. Visit your dermatologist for regular skin cancer screenings.

Tanning booths or tanning beds are far from safe. While makers of these beds/booths tell you that they only produce UVA, the nun-burning type of rays, in fact UVA rays penetrate the skin even deeper than UBV rays do, and can make our skin dry, wrinkled and increase the risk of skin cancer.

Take care on cool, cloudy days. Damaging rays aren’t inhibited by clouds, and you can still get burned because ultraviolet light can penetrate cloud cover. Take precautions even when the sun isn’t shining brightly.

Good skin care and healthy lifestyle choices can help delay the natural aging process and prevent various skin problems.
